Gear

For all you gear junkie’s, here’s my gear list:

Synth’s and samplers

  • Kurzweil K2500X AES, the Audio Elite version with all the options and the cool look!
  • Roland MKB-1000, an old timer (1984), but it’s got the best keyboard action, never played on something more playable.
  • Roland RD-1000, vintage stage piano, uses same wooden keyboard as above (MKB-1000), onboard sounds, the e-piano’s are classic, not a copy of a Rhodes, but very dynamic and warm, especially when you use it with the built-in analog chorus!
  • Roland Juno 60 (MIDI-fied), punchy!
  • Roland JX-10, warm, full bodied sound. My favorite synth for pads. Underestimated, so a perfect pray if you want to buy one (low 2nd hand prices).
  • Clavia NordLead, cuts like a knive.
  • Ensoniq SD1, transwave (wavetable) synth, great digi pad sounds
  • Casio CZ 101, dirty digital:-)
  • Casio PT-1, kids toy, but classic drum sounds
  • Akai AX73, basic subtractive synth, but you can get a pretty good lead out of it in unison mode. The Akai S950 sampler can be routed through the filters of the AX73.
  • Kurzweil K1000 Ensemble rack, dated sound but great if you like the 80-ties:-)
  • Roland MKS-20, a classic, rack version of the RD-1000 (see above).
  • E-mu E4XT Ultra with Orbit/Phatt ROM card, RFX32 and ADAT boards. Great sounding filters.
  • Roland S-750, one of the best sounding hardware samplers, years ahead of it’s time.
  • Roland SP-700, sample player version of the above with double the memory (32 MB), but DA convertors aren’t up the same leage.
  • Roland S-550 (2x), 12 bit sampler, breeze to use with monitor/mouse/remote controller. Nice filters.
  • Roland S-330 (2x), same as above, half the memory.
  • Akai S3000XL, good workhorse.
  • Akai S1000HD, bought it recently (march 2010), sounds more raw than the Roland S-750, but I like it for drums and basses.
  • Akai S950, it cost me an arm and a leg back than (bough it new when I was 15 in 1990), unfortunately it doesn’t get used that much any more, but I will never sell it….
  • Korg S3, not so well known drumcomputer/sequencer, has some usable electronic kits.
  • VSL Horizon Sample Library, one fine library.
  • Roland Sample Library, stil one fine library.
  • Yellow Tools Independence Pro 2.5, another very fine (and huge +70 GB) library.
  • Yellow Tools Culture, great percussion module.
  • Synthogy Ivory Grand Pianos, fantastic piano sample based library.

Microphones/mic-pre’s/DI boxes

  • DPA 5006-11 surround set, 3 x 4006-TL, 2 x 4011-TL, industry standard, very clean sounding mics, great for classical recordings
  • Microtech Gefell M300 stereo set, you can compare these with the Neumann KM184′s, but better sounding.
  • AKG C451B stereo set, nice for acoustical guitars and winds.
  • Audio Technica AT4040, basic, but good sounding mic.
  • Rode NT-5, even more basic, you can get great results
  • Telefunken TD-25, vintage dynamic mic, great looks
  • Telefunken TD-26 (2x), vintage dynamic mic, looks cooler than it sounds (unless you like  avery muffled sound)
  • SE Reflexion Filter. Usefull to damp unwanted reflections
  • Crane Song Spider, 8 channel mic-pre / mixer / AD convertor. One of the best mic-pre’s (a lot of) money can buy. Same applies for the AD convertors build in.
  • RME Fireface 800 4 channel mic-pre. Great workhorse, decent mic-pre’s
  • Radial JDI duplex DI box (2x), according to the manufacturer the best DI box in the world. I still haven’t found an argument that they’re wrong:-)
