Here you can download two vintage factory libraries for the Akai S900/S950 samplers: the SL5000 and PSL9000 libraries. When I bought my Akai S950 new in 1990, the Akai dealer let me copy the libraries. I didn’t wan’t to risk loosing the libraries, some floppies were giving errors when loading. After 30 years I guess Akai doesn’t mind sharing these libraries with y’all!
I’ve made backups in different formats:
For the Akai libraries:
- DD floppy images for the S900/S950 and S1000/S3000 series
- HD floppy images for the S950 and S1000/S3000 series
- S1000 SCSI2SD image for SCSI2SD divices
- EXS24 converted for use in Logic Pro X and other soft samplers that can import EXS24 files (like the exelent freeware TX16Wx)
The SL5000 library is complete, the PSL9000 library misses floppies). Unfortunately, some of the Akai disk are damaged. They can be loaded, but some samples are glitchy or missing. In the text file included in the download files you can read more about which files are damaged.
Use Omniflop (for Windows PC’s with built-in floppy drives only) the write the DD/HD floppy images. For writing the SCSI2SD image file use Chicken Systems Translator.

If you’re interested in vintage samplers, you may like this: The Sampler Crunch impulse response library contains impulse responses of 10 vintage samplers, including the Akai S950/S1000/S1100 and Roland S-550/S-750. These can be loaded in convolution based plug-ins, like Logic Pro’s Space Designer, Steinberg’s REVerence, Altiverb, etc… It powers your DAW with the classic sound of 8, 12 and 16 bit hardware samplers.
